PLACE: On elevated ground nearby the big pond, with view over the whole length of the pond towards northern direction.

SIZE OF LIVING AREA: Internal area 88 square meters, external area (roofed but not screened) 44 square meters, plus usable garden area about 100 square meters.

LOCATION:

Baan Sammi Nature Resort is located only about 15 kilometers (or 10 miles) northeast of Chiang Mai, within the district of Doi Saket. Chiang Mai is the second biggest city of Thailand, located in the north.

Roughly locating Baan Sammi on online maps is easiest on Map of Chiang Mai and Vicinity: You will find Baan Sammi situated within grid square E8. Google provides both, map and aero-photography, and an overlay combination. For roughly locating Baan Sammi, chose Google Map. Further, you can view the area (green highlighted) of Baan Sammi on Google's Satellite Aero-Photography.

VICINITY:

Baan Sammi Nature Resort is situated between two rural villages. Huge rice-fields, numerous irrigation ditches, canals and some streams hemmed by natural vegetation, scattered small rural villages with wooden houses and farm gardens are characteristic features of this not much developed landscape.

This area is part of the Chiang Mai intermountain basin, a widely broadened valley of the Ping River (see Google Satellite Aero-photo), little more than 300 meters above sea-level. The basin is about 25 kilometers wide and delimited by the western mountain range (foothills of Doi Suthep bordering the City of Chiang Mai), eastern mountain range (foothills bordering the district village of Doi Saket), and northern hills (beyond San Sai and Doi Saket with the Mae Kuang Dam). The hills and mountains can be seen from the resort at clear sight, nearly every day except on hazy days during hot season.

Baan Sammi, and the access roads to Chiang Mai and Doi Saket, are located in an area which is not prone to flood.

DISTANCE:

From Baan Sammi, it will take a 5 minutes ride to reach the highway at Nam Phrae, and further 10 minutes by car or 15 minutes by motorbike to reach the city limit of Chiang Mai.

The distances from Baan Sammi to selected destinations are as follows:

Chiang Mai - Doi Saket Highway (118), exit 'Nam Phrae': 3.8 kilometers or 2.4 miles.
Super Highway (11), intersection 'San Dek': 14.6 km or 9 miles.
Center of Chiang Mai (wall and moat of old city center): 18 km or 11 miles.
Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX): 23 km or 14 miles.
Chiang Mai train station: 18 km or 11 miles.
Arcade bus station: 15 km or 9 miles.
BigC Extra, former Carrefour (department store and supermarket): 15.4 km or 10 miles.
Rim Ping (supermarket): 15.9 km or 10 miles.
Tesco Lotus (department store and supermarket): 17.4 km or 11 miles.
Village Pa Pong (market, shops, restaurants): 3.4 km or 2.1 miles.
Village Bo Hin (2 markets, supermarket Tesco Lotus Express, 7 Eleven, post office, petrol stations, many shops and restaurants): 6.4-7.2 km or 4-4.5 miles.
District village of Doi Saket (market, several banks, supermarket TescoLotus Express, 7 Eleven, post office, hospital, petrol stations, many shops and restaurants): 6.7 km or 4 miles.

ROUTES FOR TRANSPORT:

The resort has direct access to a small sealed village road with little traffic. This village road connects to a country road (with little to moderate traffic), running into the busy Chiang Mai - Doi Saket Highway (118), the main connection to Chiang Mai by car and motorbike.

Please see the illustrated route description ('to meeting points 1-5') with map, which describes the route from Chiang Mai to 'meeting point 5', Baan Sammi. Prior to visiting Baan Sammi the first time, it is strongly recommend to print both description and map for your easy guidance.

This route, as well as other routes not described herein, is passable year-round and not prone to flood. Gasoline stations can be found in sufficient number on the Highway.

For cyclists, there is a route from the resort to Chiang Mai nearly exclusively on village and country roads with little traffic, but not easy to find and follow.

TRANSPORTATION:

Car and motorbike: This is the most suitable and independent mode of transport. Cars and motorbikes can be hired in the city of Chiang Mai or at the airport. Alternatively, cars can be hired through a phone call from Baan Sammi (with delivery of car to Baan Sammi). Light motorbikes and bicycles for rent are available from Baan Sammi, too. Taxi and other public transportation: You can get a ride by taxi from the airport and from some places in Chiang Mai, or by phone call. You can also hire a song-thaeo or tuk-tuk to get a ride from the city to the resort. Guiding the driver is needed. Do show him the map (with address in Thai script), and, even better, let him call Khun Sam's mobile for locating and guidance. There is also a regular route for song-thaeos between Chiang Mai and Doi Saket on the Highway (118). The song-thaeos can pick you up or drop off either at the village Nam Phrae or the market (talad) of Doi Saket. Use a motorbike or bicycle to connect from the resort to Nam Phrae or Doi Saket, or choose a motorbike-taxi. Please, read my guidelines on Baan Sammi by Public Transport.

Private taxis for trips booked in advance are available: saloon-car, song-thaeo, tuk-tuk, or 4-wheel-drive pick-up; you may choose depending on your preference and destination.

Bicycle: Due to subtropical climate rather than distance, hiking and biking is not the favorite mode of transportation for most foreigners as well as Thais. Further, there is a total lack of bicycle-friendly city infrastructure and drivers' awareness of cyclists (and pedestrians). However, there is a close-meshed net of small sealed country roads with very little traffic, that can well be used by cyclists, flat throughout in the Chiang Mai intermountain basin, and of not steep gradients in the nearby foot-hills. A very helpful map for cyclists, and for those who like riding a motorbike off the busy main roads, is available (currently for Chiang Mai only, later also for its vicinity including Doi Saket).

RESORT AREA:

The size of the resort is over 4 rai (almost 7,000 square meters or over 8,000 square yards), shape almost rectangular, flat with some parts slightly elevated, undulated and sloped. The environment is kept naturally, and it comprises one big pond, three small ponds, canals, bower and gazebo, several pathways, and abundant vegetation: wild trees, bamboos, and climbers, most of them native, then ornamental trees and bushes, many of them with fragrant flowers, palms, ferns, herbs and orchids. Several fruit trees have been planted, among them mango, lychee, roseapple, pomelo, lemon, tamarind, bananas and papayas.

Due to the natural environment, the area inhabits wild animals and plants, which should be protected by not entering these sites other than on pathways. Adults need to keep an eye on playing children, especially outside the private garden area. Although the resort area is not a mosquito heaven, simple precautionary measures, chiefly in the evening, are recommended. At night, no mosquito net covering the bedstead is necessary as the interior of all houses is fully protected by mosquito screens on doors, windows and other openings.

RESORT FACILITIES:

Available is electricity, gas, telephone, high-speed internet (WLAN), mobile phone, Thai TV, drinkable tap water, bottled drinking water, ground-water for irrigation.

The environment can be used for walking and relaxing. The big pond has 5 piers (1 pier shared, the other private) from where you can enter the pond for swimming, fishing, and boating. A small rowboat for 1-2 persons is available. The pathways, bower and gazebo invite for recreation. Several spots in the environment can be used for camping and barbecue.

A roofed living-space at the chalet next to the office is available for general use, e.g. for breakfast, dinner, communication. You may choose the type of breakfast: western type or Thai type, or fruits of the season. On request, Thai meals for lunch and dinner can be offered.

The kitchen facilities of Baan Sammi can be used if there is no own kitchen in the rented home.

Usage of washing machine at the chalet near the office is possible (if there is no own washing machine in the homes), as well as resort-own or external laundry service.

For trips, a motorbike can be hired. A pick-up service can be offered, e.g. for transport to and from airport, railway and bus station. Trips by car and pickup with a driver can be arranged.

FACILITIES IN THE VICINITY:

Small shops can be found in all villages around. Local markets, open daily or on certain days of the week, can be found in Ban Pa Pong, Ban Bo Hin, Doi Saket, and in many other villages.

There are small cook-shops and restaurants in many villages, mostly opened on certain hours every day. Thai restaurants can be found in and between villages, most often located on country roads or higher ranking roads. Also, several restaurants with western food can be found in the district of Doi Saket.

In the district village, Doi Saket, there are several banks, a post office and a hospital.

All these facilities can be reached from Baan Sammi on streets which are sealed and not prone to flood.

HOLIDAY FACILITIES IN THE VICINITY:

A network of small sealed country roads, covering a huge area, invites for trips by motorbike and bicycle. Destinations: Mae Kuang Dam and other dams, San Kamphaeng Hot Springs, Muang On Cave, national parks (e.g. Mae Takhrai), Buddhist temples (e.g. Wat Doi Saket and several isolated monasteries on hills), resorts with restaurants and swimming pools (e.g. Wang Than Resort), specialty restaurants (e.g. German Restaurant), Tao Garden and Spa, Thawichon Botanical Garden, horse riding, fitness center, handicraft villages (e.g. Bo Sang, for Sa paper, umbrellas, teak furniture, silver, Thai silk), Celadon manufactories, air excursions (hot air balloon, paragliding and others), Chiang Mai - Lamphun Golf Club.

FACILITIES IN CHIANG MAI AND VICINITY:

Chiang Mai, the biggest city in the north of Thailand, offers all establishments and public utilities. For detailed tourist information about Chiang Mai, online references are given under Selected Links, of which One Stop in Chiang Mai might be a good choice for a first general survey.

The Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) is centrally located, south-west from the old city, only a few minutes ride by car. There are many daily flights between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, many national destinations can be reached from Chiang Mai, and there are flights to neighboring countries, too.

The train station is located a few kilometers east of the old city. The State Railways of Thailand connect Chiang Mai with Bangkok. There are several trains daily, both day and over night trains. Seats can be booked online.

There are many department stores and super-markets with both western and Thai goods. Easy to reach are BigC Extra (former Carrefour), Rim Ping, and Tesco Lotus.

The supply with hospitals, physicians and dentists is good.

There are several international schools (and one German school).

Several consulates are present in Chiang Mai, e.g. US, British, Australian, German.

There are plenty of car rental services in Chiang Mai. Many international car rental companies offer services at or near the International Airport.

HOLIDAY FACILITIES IN CHIANG MAI AND VICINITY:

The old city of Chiang Mai, surrounded by a city wall and moat, is worth seeing. It is famous for its numerous old Buddhist temples. Night Bazaar and the Sunday Street Market should not be missed, but there are numerous other sightseeing destinations. Chiang Mai offers all amenities, from night life, bunji-jumping and hot balloon flights to visits of museums, zoo and night safari park.

Trips by motorbike and car: Destinations are, e.g., reservoirs, hot springs, caves, natural parks, temples, ruins of ancient Chiang Mai, elephant camps, orchid farms, botanical gardens, hill-tribe villages, handicraft villages and markets, manufactories. Jungle and mountain trips can be done with a 4-wheel-drive pick-up, by yourself or with a driver and guide.
